What is Unwanted Pregnancy (Abortion)?
Abortion, also known as the termination of unwanted pregnancy, is medically referred to as medical evacuation under 10 weeks.
Abortion is not only performed to terminate pregnancy but also for the thickening of the uterine lining. It is important both for cleaning the uterine cavity and for pathological diagnosis through histological examination. In Turkey, pregnancy termination upon request is legal under 10 weeks.
How is an Abortion Performed?
The patient is positioned in the lithotomy position (lying down with legs apart) under local or general anesthesia, and the vaginal area is cleaned. Then, the cervix is held with a single-tooth tenaculum, and a Karman cannula (plastic cannula) is inserted into the uterus. Negative pressure is applied with a vacuum syringe to evacuate the pregnancy material inside. Checks are made for bleeding. The patient is prescribed antibiotics.
Are There Any Risks of Abortion?
If a metal curette is used during the procedure or if multiple interventions are performed with a Karman cannula, the natural lining of the uterus may be damaged. Therefore, it is very important to entrust yourself to an experienced physician in this field. In such cases, the uterine walls may stick together, leading to a reduction in the amount and duration of bleeding during menstruation. If adhesions are detected by hysterosalpingography (contrast uterine imaging) or 3D ultrasound, hysteroscopic intervention may be necessary.
Is abortion banned?
In Turkey, the termination of pregnancies up to 10 weeks on request is legal. However, abortions performed after the 10th week of pregnancy are illegal and subject to legal sanctions. In some countries around the world, abortion is banned, but in our country, it is legal up to the specified gestational week.
Is abortion outside of marriage legal?
Whether a woman is single or married does not affect her request to terminate a pregnancy, i.e., to have an abortion. A woman who becomes pregnant outside of marriage is legally allowed to have an abortion up to the 10th week of pregnancy (up to 9 weeks and 6 days).
What is the legal time limit for abortion?
In Turkey, the legal time limit for abortion is up to 10 weeks (9 weeks and 6 days or less). Performing an abortion after the 10th week of pregnancy is strictly against the law.

Is Abortion Risky?
Every medical intervention carries some risk; however, the likelihood of developing a complication during abortion is below 2%. With an experienced surgeon, this rate is reduced to almost below 1%. If excessive bleeding occurs during the procedure, certain medications may be used to stop it. There is a risk of perforation of the uterine wall during the intervention. In such cases, repair of the wall is not always necessary; in most cases, observation is sufficient.
As a late complication after the procedure, infection may occur. Therefore, a 5-day antibiotic treatment is strongly recommended after the abortion. Although not common, pain can be felt after abortion; this pain usually subsides with the use of painkillers. Signs of infection after abortion may include foul-smelling discharge, groin pain, and in rare cases, a fever of 38°C or higher. Vaginal bleeding in the form of spotting typically occurs in the first 10 days after abortion. Once this ends, sexual intercourse is allowed again, but always with protection.
How Is Abortion Performed?
Sedation anesthesia is administered by the anesthesiologist through mild-effect medications injected into a vein in the patient's arm. The patient is examined using a vaginal speculum, and the contents are carefully evacuated using a thin Karman cannula inserted into the cervix. This procedure can also be performed under local anesthesia without requiring the patient to be under general anesthesia.
Things to Consider After Abortion?
Spotting may occur in the first 10 days after an abortion. Since every procedure carries a risk of infection, you must use the prescribed antibiotic exactly as instructed. Your first menstrual period after the procedure may be delayed by 10–12 days. Regardless of when your first sexual intercourse occurs after curettage, you must use protection.
Does Abortion Harm Me?
The probability of complications in this procedure is 2%, and these may include prolonged bleeding or perforation of the uterus. In both cases, the situation can be repaired without causing harm to the patient.
What Is Therapeutic Curettage – Vacuum Aspiration Curettage?
It is a procedure performed under local or sedation (mild and sleep-inducing) anesthesia, where the cervix is held with a single-tooth tenaculum through the vaginal route using a speculum, and then a Karman cannula is inserted into the uterus to evacuate its contents using negative pressure.
Can I Get Pregnant After an Abortion?
It is possible to become pregnant in the month immediately following an abortion. Therefore, it is recommended to start using a contraceptive method right away.
Until What Week or Month Can an Abortion Be Performed?
If this procedure is performed by choice rather than for medical reasons, it can be done up to 9 weeks and 6 days — that is, until the pregnancy is 2 months and 13 days old.
How Is Pregnancy Termination Performed?
The vacuum aspiration curettage method can be applied up to a pregnancy duration of 9 weeks and 6 days. This procedure can also be performed in cases where an abnormality is detected in the embryo, when the heartbeat has stopped, or in cases such as an empty gestational sac.
