What is Embryo Transfer?
After the egg retrieval procedure, embryos at the development stage are transferred into the uterus on selected days through a thin catheter. The day of embryo transfer is determined jointly by the doctor and embryologist based on the development status of the embryos. Embryo transfer is a critical stage of IVF treatment and an important factor that increases success. Therefore, the transfer procedure is carried out with great care and attention by expert doctors and embryologists. When performed under appropriate conditions, embryo transfer during IVF treatment significantly increases the chances of success and thus holds great importance.
Frozen Embryo Transfer

Especially in patients with a high ovarian reserve, if ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) develops due to hormone medications given for egg development, all obtained embryos are frozen. The embryo transfer procedure is performed 1-2 months after the egg retrieval.
Freezing is also performed in patients planned for preimplantation genetic diagnosis, when it is determined during the treatment process that the uterine lining is not thick enough for embryo implantation, or when conditions such as large polyps inside the uterus, excessive fluid accumulation, or fluid in the fallopian tubes are observed before transfer, all embryos are frozen.
How is IVF Embryo Transfer Performed?
The basic principle of embryo transfer is to place the embryo in the designated area within the uterus with as little trauma as possible. Since it does not require anesthesia, it is a painless procedure. To facilitate easy embryo transfer, a transfer trial with a catheter is performed on the patient’s initial examination day to prevent potential difficult transfers. To place the embryos in the most suitable location within the uterus and avoid damaging the endometrium, a full bladder and ultrasound guidance are preferred during transfer. This approach helps determine the angle between the cervix and uterus, establishing the path for the transfer catheter and minimizing trauma. The use of high-resolution ultrasound improves visibility during the transfer, positively impacting success. During the procedure, the cervix is cleaned with a sterile swab, and embryos are placed into the uterus via a thin, soft catheter. Using a soft catheter reduces the risk of bleeding at the cervix. The tips of the catheters we use can be tracked under ultrasound, ensuring embryos are placed precisely in the correct location within the uterus. After completing the embryo transfer, the catheter is gently removed, and our embryologists check under a microscope to confirm that all embryos have been successfully transferred.
On which day of the menstrual cycle is embryo transfer performed?
Embryo transfer is generally performed between the 18th and 22nd days of the menstrual cycle. This may vary depending on the woman's cycle and treatment plan.
What Should Be Considered After Embryo Transfer?
Rest and Relaxation: Resting and relaxing for a few hours after embryo transfer can help the body focus on the healing process.
- Light Activity: It is important to avoid excessive physical activity after the transfer. Low-impact activities such as light walks or relaxing yoga can be preferred.
- Regular Use of Medications: It is very important to take the medications prescribed by your doctor regularly. This is necessary to maintain hormonal balance and support the embryo implantation process.
- Fluid Intake: Drinking plenty of water is important to maintain body hydration and support blood circulation.
- Healthy Nutrition: Following a balanced and nutritious diet helps the body receive the nutrients it needs. A diet including fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy proteins should be followed.
- Alcohol and Smoking: Alcohol consumption and smoking should be avoided as they can negatively affect embryo implantation.
- Stress Management: Avoiding stress can support the body's natural healing process. Practicing stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or relaxation methods can be beneficial.
- Ideal Body Temperature: Maintaining balanced body temperature can facilitate embryo implantation in the uterus. Excessive exposure to hot baths, saunas, or intense exercise should be avoided.
- Follow-up Appointments: It is important to attend follow-up appointments regularly as scheduled by your doctor. During these appointments, embryo development will be monitored and appropriate measures will be taken if necessary.
