Hope After Years of Waiting

Some treatment journeys call for patience, careful attention and making the right decision at the right time. The story of our patient living abroad is one of them…

Our patient presented to our center in 2024 due to infertility associated with severe male factor and advanced maternal age. During their 17-year marriage, they had conceived a child through IVF treatment approximately 10 years earlier. However, despite four subsequent IVF attempts and a total of eight embryo transfers, no pregnancy had been achieved.

In our initial evaluation, it was a positive finding that her ovarian reserve was at a good level for her age. However, we needed to investigate the possible causes of the repeated treatment failures in detail. The examinations revealed a submucosal fibroid affecting the uterine cavity. In addition, considering the age factor, the possibility of chromosomal abnormalities in the embryos was also taken into account.

For this reason, we first planned to obtain embryos and evaluate them for chromosomal abnormalities. As a result of the treatment, a total of ten embryos were obtained. Among the embryos sent for genetic testing, two were found to be chromosomally normal. After such a long and challenging journey, this result represented a very valuable source of hope for the couple.

Our patient underwent surgery in Germany for the fibroid in her uterus. When she later came to our center to prepare for embryo transfer, our examination showed that there was still a lesion within the uterine cavity that could negatively affect embryo implantation. Although preparation for the transfer had already begun, we decided that proceeding with embryo transfer under the current conditions would not be appropriate.

This decision was not easy for either our patient or our team. However, we had only two healthy embryos available, and we wanted to provide the most favorable possible uterine environment for transfer. We therefore recommended another hysteroscopy. During the second procedure performed in Germany, the polyp inside the uterine cavity was removed.

Following the operation, the hysterosalpingography and subsequent examinations showed that the uterine cavity was normal. We were now ready for embryo transfer.

We invited our patient back to our center. The uterus was prepared for pregnancy using a medicated embryo transfer protocol, and the chromosomally normal embryo was transferred.

And finally, we received the wonderful news we had been waiting for: The pregnancy had been achieved.

After years of attempts, disappointments, and tremendous patience, this news brought great happiness to all of us. We are now following the pregnancy with excitement and looking forward to the day the baby is born healthy.
